Can Label, Foodland Evaporated Milk, Original NOS Lithograph, Antique

Before the grocery store. Before the supermarket. Before the can aisle existed at all — someone printed these by hand, one color at a time.

This is an original evaporated milk can label — a 1920s lithograph for Foodland Brand. It has never been used. Never wrapped a can. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition.

The label is exceptional. A Holstein cow stands in a field in full pastoral detail — the black and white markings rendered with true-to-life accuracy, the setting composed with real care. What elevates this label beyond the ordinary is the gilding: gold leafing applied over the lithography, visible in the photographs, transforming an already fine label into something that catches the light. Adding gold to a can label was expensive, deliberate, and rare. Someone decided that a can of evaporated milk deserved that treatment. The offset press was introduced in 1911 but companies were slow to adopt it — this label has the characteristics of a transitional piece, carrying the quality standards of stone lithography into the new era. Frame it as farmhouse or dairy decor, or as a piece of 1920s American commercial art at its most lavish. At 9.75 by 3.5 inches it suits a narrow frame — beautiful alone or grouped with other milk labels from the era.
